George Holder and Mary(last name unknown) of Duplin (Sampson) County North Carolina

Not much is known of the beginnings of our George Holder and Mary. Some speculation is he came from early Virgina and maybe England before that. George Holder wrote his will 25 Aug 1799 in Sampson County North Carolina. That part of Sampson County was originally Duplin County.

It is believed that George Holder was born about 1740 because of the ages of his children. George is listed as having 100 acres of land in Duplin County 12 Oct 1767 side of the Great Cohera in the fork of Beaverdam Swamp. George is listed in the 1783 Duplin Co. early Census and in the 1784 early tax list of Sampson County. Sampson County was established April 1784.

George Holder served in the Revolutionary war and received pay of one pound and 14 shillings for his service.

In 1786 and 1789 George is listed in court records of Sampson Co. as being excempt from paying a poll tax(this would be because of his war service)

In 1790 George is listed on the Sampson County Census

In 1793 George asked if he could build a mill across his branch of the river-Granted

In 1799 George again is excempt from paying a poll tax

The 25th Aug 1799 George Writes his last will and testament and lists his wife Mary and his children and includes his daughters married names. George also lists an inventory of his belongings including mill stones and mill irons showing proof he did own a mill.

Children of George are:
Rachel Holder born abt 1768   Married a Mr. Hodge
Mary Holder born abt 1770      Married a Mr. Bell

Jenny McLean and Joe McLean parents of Sarah McNeill

In the last month Deena Hill and Desi Campbell ,cousins, found the parents of Sarah McNeill.
In the 1880 Census of Harnett County North Carolina Sarah list her father as born in North Carolina and her mother as born in Virginia.

A Jenny McLean (she was a McLean because Archibald McLean owned her) was found on a 1880 Upper Little River Harnett County North Carolina Census. Jenny is living with her son George and list her birth place as Virginia and her parents birth as Africa. This is a VERY exciting find, you will not see too many people that have proof of coming from Africa in their family tree.

We know this is Sarah's mother because we match DNA from people who descend from George McLean, so if Jenny is George's Mother then that means Jenny is Sarah's Mother and Sarah said her Mother was born in Virginia.

Jenny is living with her son Jim McLean in Barbecue, Harnett,North Carolina which is right next door to Upper Little River where she lived with son George. The age of Jenny in this census is WAY off but that is not unusual with former slaves. The reason being that no records were kept on slave births, death or marriages so as far as age goes it was usually a guess by who ever the census taker was asking.

Sarah McNeill Family

Sarah McNeill Family
The search for Sarah McNeill and her family has been very difficult. You have to remember in the years of slavery there were very few, if any, records kept on slaves. These slaves were treated as a possesion not as a person sadly enough. There was a 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedule which named the owners and then the age and sex of a slave, but no slave name. There were no birth, marriage or death records kept of the slaves. The only chance to actually see a slaves name is if there was a deed or a Will listing the slaves by name. Slaves took on the last name of their owners.

The most amazing tool to help in the discovery of our slave ancestors was the invention of  DNA. Because of all the Ritchie descendants 54 so far and counting and the McNeill descendants 42 so far and counting that have had their DNA tested with Ancestry, we have been able to peice together this family. I have been working almost daily for the last 2 years with our cousin Desi Campbell in North Carolina to bring this family together. He is an amazing help and very knowledgeable in the black research. We have determined to the best of our ability with the lack of records that Sarah McNeill had 13 children. We believe her husbands name MAY have been Sherd or Sherod because of the many grandchildren named Sherd and Sherod. We have no proof of this being his name but hope to someday.

Sarah was owned by a man by the name of Neill McNeill in Cumberland County North Carolina. In 1812 Neill McNeill writes a will and gives Sarah to his daughters, Catheriene,Mary and Sarah and his son Hector. In 1841 Mary McNeill (who never married) gives Sarah to her sister Catherine. On the 1850 Slave Schedule Sarah is living with Catherine McNeill, (who never married). On the 1860 Slave Schedule Sarah is living with Jennett (who never married), a neice of Catherine. We cannot find Sarah any where in the 1870 census. She would be a free women. In 1880 Sarah is living with her son Charles. Sarah lived to be at least 80 years old or older. Amazing considering what she had to endure in her life time. I cannot wait to met Sarah and her family someday.

This is the family of  Neill McNeill that took Nelson's Mother,Miss McNeill Holder, from Cumberland County North Carolina and took her far away from her family to Lawrence County Missouri where she gave birth to Nelson Holder Ritchie on the 24 Aug 1840 and then died shortly there after. Strange to think Nelson grew up with Neill's children.Below are pictures of Neill's son William Duncan McNeill and Neill's daughter Nancy Catherine McNeill. Nelson ran away from the McNeill farm in about 1855,he probably did not know Neill's son Nevin Porter McNeill. It seems that Nelson ran away right after Neill's mother Nancy Ann McNeill died. It makes since that he would leave after the women he said raised him died.
